Passy - Muir Tracheostomy Speaking Valve on Ventilator Dependent Patients




Abstract
The need to establish communication for patient with tracheostomy done and ventilatory support has been identified. Mr. David Muir who is quadriplegic designed and developed in co- operation with otolaryngologist Victor Passy, M.D..
The Passy-Muir Tracheostomy Speaking Valve is a one-way valve that allows air to enter the lungs upon inspiration. On expiration, the valve closes and the air is directed into trachea and through the vocal folds simulating normal expiration. Passy-Muir Tracheostomy Speaking Valve has been shown to improve the communications of the ventilator dependent patients by improving their speech intelligibility, their speech flow, by eliminating their speech hesitancy.
So the patients has been shown to improve the patient emotional status, by decreasing the oral, nasal and pulmonary secretions and giving the patients feelings of independency by improving their physical and mental activities and general outlook on their life.
We expirenced two cases of Passy-Muir Tracheostomy Speaking Valve use on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients with good outlook,
